How to Apply for Lifeline: Step-by-Step
From gathering documents to activating your phone, here's exactly what to expect when you apply for Lifeline service.
Before you start
- A government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
- Proof of program participation (an award or benefit letter) or proof of income
- Your current mailing address and a way to be reached (email or another phone number)
Apply in three steps
- Step 1 — Tell us how you qualify (by program or by income) using the eligibility form
- Step 2 — Upload or reference your supporting documentation
- Step 3 — Choose your plan and, if eligible, your free device
How long approval takes
Most applications are reviewed within one to two business days. Applications that qualify by program participation are often faster to verify than income-based applications, since program status can frequently be checked electronically.
After you're approved
You'll get a confirmation by email or text, your device will ship (if applicable), and you can activate service as soon as it arrives — or immediately, if you're bringing your own compatible phone.
